Spring into savings - 💰✨

As we continue navigating these challenging economic times, our goal is to provide you with valuable insights and resources to help manage your expenses effectively. This month, we highlight the crucial role of unpaid carers during Carers Week, offering detailed information on the benefits available to them and addressing recent issues with Carer’s Allowance claims. Our feature articles cover a range of topics from cost-effective travel insurance solutions to savvy tips on disposing of old furniture and saving on holiday travel expenses.

In addition, discover the exciting events Wired Wirral has planned for Carers Week 2024, including wellbeing workshops, social events, and health checks. Whether you’re an unpaid carer, planning your next holiday, or looking to save on tech purchases, we’ve got practical advice and resources to support you. Let’s work together to make the most of every opportunity and navigate the cost-of-living crisis with confidence.

Supporting unpaid carers: Benefits and challenges

As we celebrate Carers Week from June 10th to 16th, it’s crucial to recognise the invaluable contributions of unpaid carers and ensure they are aware of the benefits they can access. Here’s a comprehensive overview of the support available and the current challenges faced by those claiming Carer’s Allowance.

Benefits available for unpaid carers

1.Carer’s Allowance:

Carer’s Allowance is a financial benefit for people who spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone with substantial care needs. The weekly allowance is £81.90, but there are specific eligibility criteria:

  • You must be 16 or older.
  • You must not be in full-time education.
  • You cannot earn more than £151 per week (after taxes, care costs, and pension contributions).
More details can be found on the Gov.uk website.

2. Carer’s Credit:

For those who are not eligible for Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Credit helps to fill gaps in your National Insurance record, ensuring it doesn’t affect your future State Pension. You need to be caring for someone for at least 20 hours a week to qualify.

3. Universal Credit:

If you’re on a low income or out of work, you may be able to receive Universal Credit, which includes a carer’s element.

4. Council Tax Reduction:

Some local authorities offer reductions in council tax for carers. Check with Wirral Council to see if you qualify.

5. Employment and Support Allowance (ESA):

If you can’t work because of illness or disability, ESA might be an option. Carers can receive support if they’re also eligible for ESA.
More information on benefits for carers is available on the Citizens Advice website.

Challenges with claiming Carer’s Allowance

Recent reports have highlighted significant issues with Carer’s Allowance claims. The number of carers being overpaid has surged, leading to financial stress and complications for many. In 2022-23, overpayments affected 34,500 carers, amounting to £150 million (Wired).

Key Issues:

  • Overpayments: These often occur due to changes in circumstances not being reported promptly, such as income fluctuations or changes in care hours.
  • Complex Eligibility Criteria: The stringent rules regarding earnings and hours of care can be confusing and lead to unintentional breaches.
  • Recovery of Overpayments: Carers who have been overpaid face the burden of repaying the excess amount, which can create significant financial hardship.

MPs are calling for a review of Carer’s Allowance to address these issues and ensure that the system is fair and manageable for all carers. For more detailed coverage of these challenges, see the Guardian article.

Unpaid carers are the backbone of our community, providing essential care and support. Understanding the benefits available and navigating the challenges associated with claiming Carer’s Allowance are crucial steps in ensuring carers receive the support they deserve. During Carers Week, let’s acknowledge their efforts and advocate for better resources and fairer policies.

Smart ways to dispose of your old sofa without breaking the bank

Struggling to get rid of your old sofa while managing your budget? Here are seven cost-effective and sometimes profitable ways to do it:

  1. Sell online: Use platforms like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or Gumtree to sell your sofa. This can earn you some extra cash.
  2. Donate: Many charities, such as the British Heart Foundation, will collect your sofa for free if it's in good condition. This not only helps others but also saves disposal fees.
  3. Freecycle: Offer your sofa on Freecycle or other community sharing sites to give it a new home without any cost.
  4. Council collection services: Check if your local council offers free or low-cost bulk item collections. This can be a convenient option.
  5. Recycle: Some recycling centres accept large furniture. Ensure you check the guidelines as if you are using a van or a trailer you will need to book. There can be potential fees.
  6. Upcycle: Get creative and give your sofa a new life with some DIY skills. Turn it into something new and unique for your home.
  7. Trade-in: Some retailers offer trade-in deals when you buy a new sofa. This can reduce the cost of your new purchase.

By exploring these options, you can responsibly dispose of your old sofa while keeping your expenses low, supporting your community, and even making a bit of extra money.

Saving money on holiday travel: Essential tips for managing your travel money

With the cost of living on the rise, saving money wherever possible has become a top priority. As many of us begin planning our holidays, finding cost-effective ways to manage travel expenses is crucial. Here are some impartial tips to help you save money when handling your travel money, ensuring you can enjoy your holiday without unnecessary financial stress.

1. Compare exchange rates before you go

Exchange rates can vary significantly between providers. Check rates at banks, post offices, and online services to find the best deal. Avoid exchanging money at airports, where rates are often less favourable.

2. Use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees

Some credit cards charge hefty fees for foreign transactions. Look for a card that offers zero foreign transaction fees to avoid these extra costs. This can save you a significant amount, especially if you’re planning to use your card frequently abroad.

3. Consider a prepaid travel card

Prepaid travel cards allow you to load money in different currencies before you travel. These cards often offer better exchange rates than traditional exchange services and can help you stick to your budget by limiting your spending to the pre-loaded amount.

4. Avoid dynamic currency conversion

When paying by card abroad, you may be offered the choice to pay in your home currency rather than the local currency. Always opt to pay in the local currency, as dynamic currency conversion usually comes with unfavourable exchange rates and additional fees.

5. Withdraw cash wisely

Using your debit card to withdraw cash from ATMs abroad can be convenient but can also incur high fees. Check with your bank to understand their foreign withdrawal fees and consider taking out larger amounts less frequently to minimise these charges.

6. Monitor exchange rate fluctuations

Exchange rates fluctuate daily. If you have time before your trip, monitor the rates and exchange your money when the rate is favourable. There are many online tools and apps that can alert you when rates are at their best.

7. Budget and plan ahead

Set a daily budget for your trip to avoid overspending. Having a clear plan on how much you will need each day can help you manage your money more effectively and prevent any financial surprises.

8. Use technology to track spending

Apps and online banking tools can help you keep track of your spending in real time. This can be particularly useful when travelling, as it helps you stay within your budget and monitor how much you have left.

Introducing the travel insurance directory: Cost-effective solutions for all travellers

Travel insurance isn’t just about getting your money back if there’s a problem with accommodation or travel. It’s also crucial to ensure you can afford medical care when you’re abroad. That’s why we’re excited to introduce the Travel Insurance Directory.

If you have a medical condition, finding travel insurance can be challenging. Premiums can increase, certain conditions may be excluded, or you might even face refusal of insurance altogether.

The Money Helper provide a Travel Insurance Directory. It connects you with specialist providers who can offer quotes tailored to your needs, ensuring you have the coverage necessary for peace of mind while travelling.
